Free water!  With rain barrels you can catch rainwater, a natural resource, to water your garden and lower your water bill.

Rainwater is void of all the chemicals you get from your municipal water system, which can disrupt a healthy soil environment.  It is naturally soft and contains nitrogen from the atmosphere which plants love!
Depending on your watering needs, you can choose from simple to advanced systems.  I have two rain barrels that work on simple gravity.  They have spigots near the bottom.  I added a sink drain, made of small mesh, to the top which keeps misquitos out.  For ease of use, they are centered on plywood and raised and supported by concrete blocks.

This is my first year using rain barrels, and it's been a luxury to have rainwater for my garden whenever I need it.  I am amazed at how fast they fill up.

That's great! I know you will enjoy it. I can envision pretty flowering vines cascading over the top. The type of flower will depend on the conditions (sunny/shady) of where your barrel is located.

Great idea! Now not only will I have free water for the garden, but will be ready for the post apocalyptic water wars.

Neil,

I guess one can't be overly prepared. Better buy more than one!
